Diagnostic Use / Indications

DHEA and 4AD are reffered to adrenal androgens. They are secreted by the adrenals and gonads and are precursors to testosterone. There is a small diurnal pattern parrallel  to cortisol. Clinically because of the association with testosterone, DHEA and 4AD are involved in the production and maintenance of secondary sex characteristics. Thus gonadal disturbances  such as delayed puberty infertility, precocious puberty, and conditions such as Klinefelter's  syndrome (XXY , primary hypogonadism) can lead to abnormal DHEA and 4AD levels.
