Method | Buccal /oral /saliva swab in virus transport medium or CSF will be tested for Mumps virus RNA. The buccal or oral swab specimens are obtained by massaging the parotid gland area for 30 seconds prior to swabbing the area around Stensen’s duct. A commercial swab designed for the collection of throat specimens can be used but placed in virus transport tube.(A swab pack is available - see swab guide) Positive samples may be further investigated to determine viral genotype. As an alternative urine samples may also be tested |
Diagnostic Use / Indications | Clinical samples for the detection of virus should be collected as soon as possible after onset of disease. These samples should include an acute phase blood (clotted)for serological testing. |
