Diagnostic Use / Indications

Amyloid A is an acute phase protein, which in response to inflammatory processes exhibits a rapid increase in its blood concentration up to 1000 fold from its initial concentration.  Amyloid A is more conclusive than CRP in patients with viral infections, rejection reactions to kidney transplants as well as in patients with cystic fibrosis treated with corticoids.  In the case of inflammatory arthritis, Amyloid A was found to exhibit the closest correlation to the activity of the disease.
