Test Identifier Information

Registration CodeHCRP
Method

Abbott C series analyser, Abbott reagents: Immunoturbidimetric, latex immunoassay.

Diagnostic Use / Indications

hsCRP is a risk marker for cardiovascular disease. The test measures basal levels of CRP.

Patients with a high hsCRP are more likely to develop:

-stroke

-myocardial infarction

-severe peripheral vascular disease

CAUTION: This test should not be used during acute illness

*In the absence of overt inflammation there is a gradient of cardiovascular risk across the normal range and at higher levels.
Interpretation

High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is a test used to measure basal levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and has been of use clinically in the assessment of the likelihood of the development of cardiovascular disease within the next 10 years. Elevated levels of hsCRP over several weeks indicate a greater risk.

The best discretionary use of hsCRP is in refining the risk profile of those who have an intermediate risk and who fall close to a threshold for pharmacological intervention.

Caution: hsCRP is very sensitive to even minor degrees of background inflammation and should be interpreted with caution close to the time of any intercurrent illness.
