Interpretation

Islet Cell Antibodies
The presence of Islet cell antibodies (ICA) is used to predict the onset of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in first degree relatives of IDDM patients, and to differentiate the disease from non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Other clinical indications for ICA testing include predicting the conversion of gestational diabetes to IDDM, predicting IDDM in patients with other autoimmune endocrinopathies and monitoring immunosuppressive treatment and the immune response following the transplantation of either islet cells or whole pancreas into diabetic patients. The absence of ICA may also help in the clinical interpretation of atypical forms of IDDM.

Additional Information

There may be a delay in the reporting of positive samples as these are further tested (titred) to give a semiquantitative result.
