Pre-Testing Requirements

Take sample 1-2 hours after an anaphylactic reaction.

A second sample taken 24 hours after reaction should also be sent to confirm tryptase level has returned to baseline.

Interpretation

Useful to ascertain if true anaphylactic reaction has occurred. Tryptase is only found in mast cell granules. Because this protein may bind to interstitial proteoglycans, serum concentrations may not increase for 15 to 30 minutes after an anaphylactic reaction.

Persistently elevated tryptase levels may be suggestive of Mastocytosis.
