Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the most potent naturally occuring androgen in man and is produced throught the action of 5a reductase(s) on testosterone. The 5a reductases are located in skin, hair follicules, prostate, genital skin and liver amongst others. DHT exerts its action via the androgen receptor as does testosterone (T). Both androgens are bound to SHBG. 

DHT analysis can be useful in differentiating enzyme defects from androgen receptor defects. In addition DHT levels provide a measure of 5a reductase activity in cases of hisutism and monitoring patients on 5a reductase inhibitors.
