Reference Interval

 Non Occupational Exposure.
 
 A whole blood lead level greater than 0.24 umol/L is a notifiable disease to
 the Medical Officer of Health.
 
 Occupational Exposure.
 
 Biological Exposure Index (BEI) of 0.97 umol/L (20 ug/dL) of whole blood
 (i.e at this level WorkSafe NZ should be notified).
 
 A suspension (removal) of an employee at a level of 1.45 umol/L (30 ug/dL) of
 whole blood for females not of reproductive capacity, and males.
 
 A suspension (removal) of an employee at a level of 0.48 umol/L (10 ug/dL) of
 whole blood for females of reproductive capacity, and those pregnant and/or
 breastfeeding.

Additional Information

EDTA anticoagulated blood samples are prefered over heparin due to the formation of micro clots of fibrinogen in heparinsed samples.
